30 Hour Famine is coming soon! It'll be March 26-27th. What's 30 Hour Famine you ask? For roughly 30 hours (12:30 PM Friday to 6:30 PM Saturday) you will fast (abstain from eating, drinking water/juice is OK). On Friday night we'll have a night of worship with a lesson that will also be a pre-camp rally. On Saturday we'll be breaking up into groups to do service projects. For this event we'll be asking you to help raise money for Worldvision.
I've uploaded two important documents.
The Letter: This has a less brief description of the event with a list of what to bring and rules. It also has the permission form and registration form that include the selection of which service projects you prefer the most.

So they took Jesus, 19:17 and carrying his own cross he went out to the place called “The Place of the Skull” (called in Aramaic Golgotha). 19:18 There they crucified him along with two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.
So they took Jesus, 19:17 and carrying his own cross he went out to the place called “The Place of the Skull” (called in Aramaic Golgotha). 19:18 There they crucified him along with two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle. The soldiers take Jesus and have Him carry His own cross. Most likely the cross that Jesus carried was actually the cross (horizontal) piece. The larger, vertical piece was already at the site of the crucifixion. The two pieces would be put together at the site. John notes that they go to a place called "The Place of the Skull". This is the site that is traditionally believed to be the site of the crucifixion.
The spot under the altar is supposed to be the exact site where the cross was.
19:18 There they crucified him along with two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.
As has been noted repeatedly before this, Jesus is innocent. He has done nothing to deserve death and has committed no crime, yet He was crucified between two criminals (Luke 23:33).
So during Jesus' life He was consistently around those in the lower echelons of society. He lowered Himself to be with those that society deemed low and unworthy of any love. And now, even in death, Jesus is crucified next to two criminals. He still allows Himself to be humbled and lowered to the level of criminals, despite not being a criminal Himself. He did all of this so that us lowly people would be able to receive salvation. It was all for a plan.
Jesus lowered Himself, allowing Himself to be killed alongside two criminals. Are we as willing to associate ourselves with people considered lesser or lower in society? Jesus dropped an infinite distance to be around us people. There should be no reason, then, that us people shouldn't be able to make the relatively slight adjustment to be at the level our society deems low and unworthy. |

19:14 (Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover, about noon.) Pilate said to the Jewish leaders, “Look, here is your king!” 19:15 Then they shouted out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked, “Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests replied, “We have no king except Caesar!” 19:16 Then Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.
19:14 (Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover, about noon.) John notes this is the Day of Preparation, which is the day before Passover, and about noon. It was at this time that everyone in Jerusalem would be stopping their work and preparing for Passover. The task of preparing a lamb to be slaughtered would also be beginning. This is significant on two levels. On one hand, the priests there would want this to be over with quickly so they could attend to the temple reparations for Passover. Also as people began preparing to slaughter Passover lambs the ultimate Passover lamb was about to be sacrificed.
Pilate said to the Jewish leaders, “Look, here is your king!” 19:15 Then they shouted out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked, “Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests replied, “We have no king except Caesar!” Pilate is in a corner. He knows what he must do. To make put the responsibility of the crucifixion onto the religious leaders, he presents Jesus as their king to antagonize them. Their response is to cry out for His crucifixion. One more time Pilate plays with the Jews by referring Jesus as their king. They respond that they have no king but Caesar. This is an obvious statement that disagrees with their personal convictions that was stated to have Jesus crucified. God was supposed to be their king. God had put those to represent Him rule in Israel's past. But now these religious leaders are declaring someone that is not representing God or God Himself as their king and ruler.
19:16 Then Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.
And with very succinct words, John tells us that Jesus is then handed over to be crucified.
The Jews here rejected God's rule and to accomplish this rejection they declared a ruthless leader who did not follow God as their king. To deny what they know is right by praising what they know is wrong. How often do we do something like this? Perhaps one of us knows that we should be setting an example to others about God, but we don't want to. Instead we rebel and cling to doing things God obviously doesn't approve of. As if denying or refusing to acknowledge something Godly wasn't bad enough, we go and do something anti-Godly. Let's try to keep our actions in step with what we say we believe. |
