The soldiers take Jesus and have Him carry His own cross. Most likely the cross that Jesus carried was actually the cross (horizontal) piece. The larger, vertical piece was already at the site of the crucifixion. The two pieces would be put together at the site. John notes that they go to a place called "The Place of the Skull". This is the site that is traditionally believed to be the site of the crucifixion.

The spot under the altar is supposed to be the exact site where the cross was.

As has been noted repeatedly before this, Jesus is innocent. He has done nothing to deserve death and has committed no crime, yet He was crucified between two criminals (Luke 23:33).
So during Jesus' life He was consistently around those in the lower echelons of society. He lowered Himself to be with those that society deemed low and unworthy of any love. And now, even in death, Jesus is crucified next to two criminals. He still allows Himself to be humbled and lowered to the level of criminals, despite not being a criminal Himself. He did all of this so that us lowly people would be able to receive salvation. It was all for a plan.
Jesus lowered Himself, allowing Himself to be killed alongside two criminals. Are we as willing to associate ourselves with people considered lesser or lower in society? Jesus dropped an infinite distance to be around us people. There should be no reason, then, that us people shouldn't be able to make the relatively slight adjustment to be at the level our society deems low and unworthy.
